Clear Prior

Clear Prior exempts students from registering for the term in which their degree will be awarded. Clear Prior is only possible for thesis and dissertation students who have met all published deadlines for the current term but have missed final clearance from the Graduate Editorial Office. No other students are eligible.

FOR IMMIGRATION PURPOSES, THE SEMESTER’S CLEAR PRIOR DEADLINE IS CONSIDERED YOUR OFFICIAL GRADUATION DATE. This means that the Clear Prior Final Clearance deadline is, for immigration purposes, the date you completed your degree and is the date your grace period starts.

If you will Clear Prior, you must take action to complete one of the following options before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline:

  • Apply for OPT: Your OPT application must reach and be receipted by the proper USCIS processing center on or before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline.
  • Apply for a New Degree Program: You must receive admission to a new degree program before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline. The program start date must be within 5 months after the Clear Prior deadline.
    • If you will transfer to another US institution for your new degree program, you must request a transfer of your SEVIS record to the new school before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline.
    • If your new degree program will be at UF, you must request an I-20 for the new program before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline.
  • Apply for a Change of Visa Status: In order for you to remain in the United States while your application is pending, your Change of Visa Status application must reach and be receipted by the proper USCIS processing center before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline.
  • Depart the United Status: If you do not apply for either OPT, a New Degree Program or a Change of Visa Status before the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline, you must leave the United States as of the 60th day after the Clear Prior deadline.
