Types of Agreements

Cooperative Agreements

The primary objective of Cooperative Agreements is the development of collaborative efforts between UF and international institutions / entities. These agreements are broad declarations of intent to promote exchange between the faculty and students of the two institutions as well as the exchange of academic and research information. More specific legal documents must be created in response to the specific activities generated by these agreements. Agreements are typically valid for five years and can be renewed through a signed addendum, if both parties agree.

Reciprocal Exchange Agreements

Reciprocal agreements are the foundation for the exchange programs in which so many UF students are involved. In an exchange program, students pay UF tuition and are assigned UF course equivalencies for the work they do abroad. Grades are factored into their UF GPA. Reciprocal agreements involve a thorough review of the curriculum on both sides. Students are required to take a full academic course load during the exchange semester and the academic work should count toward their degree.

Reciprocal agreements provide for the equal exchange of students between the University of Florida and an international accredited institution. They are detailed, legally binding contracts. The agreements' provisions address administrative concerns of either institution: Administration of the program, tuition and credit exchange, selection of students, declaration of responsibility regarding housing, transportation, risk management, advertisement, etc. Agreements are typically valid for three years initially and can be renewed through a signed addendum, if both parties agree.

Study Abroad Contracts

Study abroad program contracts can be signed with academic host institutions, third party program providers, NGOs, travel agencies, etc. These contracts specify services provided during a study abroad program such as housing, local transportation, classroom facilities, excursions, cost of tuition, etc. They are valid for one specific program / year only. Other Types of Agreements

Occasionally, agreements are created that do not easily fit within the constraints of UFIC's pre-approved reciprocal or cooperative agreements. This can happen when UF and the partner institution plan for specific collaborative efforts that are not covered in the agreements mentioned above. All agreements not in the standard UF format will be reviewed by UFIC and submitted to General Counsel if the legal language calls for additional approval.
