Insurance Announcement - New Requirements
Please read the following important announcement regarding the new health insurance requirements of your J-1 Visa. Since these new requirements will be taking effect on January 1st, 2015, we want to make sure that you are aware of them and can take the appropriate steps to adjust your current policy. We will be happy to assist you to make sure that your immigration status is not jeopardized.
The U.S. Department of State has recently announced plans to increase the required minimum insurance coverage amount from $50,000 to $100,000 per accident or illness. If your insurance coverage already meets or exceeds the new $100,000 requirement, you will not have to change or update your insurance policy. If your insurance policy does not meet the new $100,000 required coverage minimum, you will need to increase your insurance coverage by no later than January 1, 2015. Please consult with your current insurance provider to ensure you are covered by this new amount. Please provide our office with confirmation that your insurance meets the new $100,000 requirement by January 1, 2015, so that you will not be considered out of status.
If you are currently enrolled in GatorGrad Care or GatorPostdoc Care, your insurance coverage already meets or exceeds these new requirements and you do not need to take further action. If you have purchased a plan from our pre-approved list, you will need to review your plan details to ensure your plan meets the new requirement, as our pre-approved list was created under the previous rules. If you have a third-party insurance plan or an insurance plan from your home country, you will need to review your plan to ensure compliance with the new rules.
While we will be happy to assist you during this transition, it is important for you to understand that it is your final responsibility to comply with the new health insurance requirements to not violate your immigration status here in the United States.
