What Secrets Does a Society Keep from Itself? The Case of Daedalus and Icarus by A. Samuel Kimball
In Greek myth, Daedalus betrayed King Minos by helping the ruler’s wife, Pasiphaē, mate with a bull, the result of which was a monstrous offspring, the Minotaur. The author believes this myth contains a profound cultural secret—Daedalus’ secret—which Western art and literature has kept for nearly 3,000 years. Indeed, Western culture has kept the secret so well it has (almost) forgotten that there even is a secret. What is it? Where can we discover this secret in the artistic images Western culture has produced?

Sergey Ivanov, Russian cultural historian, will trace holy foolery from its origins in Egyptian monasteries through its evolution in the cities of Byzantium, its prime, and eventual decline, followed by a new flourishing and gradual fading on Greek soil. Holy fools vanished in modern Greece, but in Russia they are deeply worshiped by believers up to the present day. What is happening to this phenomenon in a modern, secular society? Ivanov will end with reflections on the role of holy fools in contemporary social discourse.
