Professor Diehl joined the University of Illinois faculty in 1989. He is also Director of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Teaching Academy and a faculty member in the Program on Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security. He is the recipient of several grants from the National Science Foundation, Lilly Endowment, and the United States Institute of Peace. He was the 1993 Alan M. Hallene University Scholar. Professor Diehl was the recipient of the 1998 Karl Deutsch Award in Intenational Relations and Peace Research. He is a three-time recipient of the Pi Sigma Alpha/Clarence A. Berdahl Award for excellence in undergraduate teaching. He was the 1999 recipient of the Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and the 1998-99 LAS Dean's Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Professor Diehl is author of International Peacekeeping (1994), co-author of War and Peace in International Rivalry (2000), Territorial Changes and International Conflict (1992) and Enhancing Organizational Performance (1997), and editor of Environmental Conflict (2001) The Dynamics of Enduring Rivalries (1997), Measuring the Correlates of War (1990), The Politics of Global Governance (2001), A Road Map to War (1999), International Law (1998) and Through the Straits of Armageddon (1987). He has published almost one hundred articles and book chapters appearing in such outlets as Journal of Conflict Resolution, Journal of Politics, Comparative Political Studies, International Studies Quarterly, American Journal of Political Science, and International Organization. His current research focuses on international conflict management.
