Campus Security - SNAP top>>
Students who need to walk on campus at night do not have to walk alone thanks to SNAP - the Student Nighttime Auxiliary Patrol. SNAP is available to all students. Call the SNAP office at 392-SNAP (or 7627) and let the operator know the location and time you will need an escort.
Safety Tips top>>
Gainesville, like any city, is not immune to crime. Here are just a few common sense safety tips you should keep in mind while living in Gainesville.
Home Safety
- Lock all doors and windows when you leave your home or apartment.
- Never leave a spare key outside the entry door, as experienced burglars know how to look for hidden keys.
- Never open the door to someone you do not know. There are cases of strangers posing as a salesman in order to get inside a home or apartment.
- Ask your landlord if the locks to your apartment are re-keyed before you move in.
- If you have a sliding glass door, install a protective device on the door if there is none. Check with your landlord for information about how to secure this type of door.
Personal Safety
- Use SNAP if you are on campus alone at night.
- Do not jog alone at night.
- When studying in the library, never leave your belongings unattended.
- Do not hitchhike or pick up hitchhikers.
- Do not carry large amount of cash or other valuables.
