Financing Study Abroad: Financial Aid
All financial aid is administered through the financial aid office at the student’s home institution.
If you are planning to use financial aid for your summer Study Abroad program, please request summer financial aid through your One.UF account on March 13th, 2017. The Student Financial Aid office will email all UF students on March 13, 2017 with instructions on how to request summer financial aid. If you have specific questions regarding using financial aid for your summer Study Abroad program, please request an appointment with Allison Costa, Financial Aid Advisor for Study Abroad at request an appointment.
For UF students, a budget reflecting the cost of attending the program will be sent to Student Financial Affairs once the following conditions have been met:
- The student answers YES on the Financial Aid questionnaire included on the online application.
(NOTE: If the student is only receiving Bright Futures and/or Florida Pre-Paid, a budget is not required.)
- The student’s application has been approved by UFIC.
Once the student’s budget has been adjusted at Student Financial Affairs, the student must speak to a financial aid advisor to confirm his or her current aid status. Please contact Allison Costa in Student Financial Affairs at Allisoncosta@ufl.edu for aid confirmation and related questions.
Non-UF students should request that their home institution send a consortium agreement to UFIC (fax to 352-392-5575 or e-mail to June Bristol). Once UFIC has approved the student’s participation, the consortium agreement will be completed and returned to the financial aid office at the student’s home institution.
Financial Aid Disbursement
Financial aid disburses after the UF semester begins but no earlier than 10 days prior to the program start date. Not all aid disburses at once; a student may receive several disbursements throughout the semester. Student charges in MyUFL may be deducted from any financial aid with the student's authorization. It is the student's responsibility to assure the payment of program fee and related charges by monitoring their UF account at MyUFL.
Students should take all of this into account this when planning their finances.
Bright Futures will pay based on current State of Florida policy. Currently, Bright Futures awards are not available for the summer term. A student receiving any other scholarships must report it to Student Financial Affairs.
Grades from courses taken abroad will count in the GPA and may be used to determine future scholarship or other eligibilities.
Students are advised not to take S/U option grades without first confirming how it may affect their awards and aid.
Florida Prepaid College Plan
For a student taking classes abroad for UF credit, payments from Florida Prepaid College Plan will be processed through University Financial Services as if the student were taking those classes on campus.
A student taking classes for transfer credit must complete the Florida Prepaid College Plan Form. This form must be returned to UFIC, who will in turn bill Florida Prepaid. The funds will be released 6-8 weeks after the start of the program. A check will be mailed to the address indicated on the form. Unfortunately, this payment cannot be direct deposited.
